The Senate Healthcare Reform Bill to provide penalties for unhealthy employees

January 8th, 2010 admin No comments

The Senate Healthcare Reform Bill has created tremendous controversy because under current law employers can discount premiums up to 20% for healthy employees.  The Senate Healthcare Reform bill will increase that percentage to 30%.  The Senate Healthcare Reform also lets cabinet officials increase it to as high as 50%!   Not only does this apply for employer groups, but the Senate Bill would also create a 10 state pilot project to test incentives who have individual health insurance not through an employer.

“This means that individuals can be penalized for their genetic make-up or other factors they cannot readily control,” said Sue Nelson, a vice-president at the American Heart Association.

The Corporate Wellness Conference Announces BioSphere Medical as a Silver Sponsor

November 3rd, 2009 admin No comments

The Corporate Wellness Conference would like to announce BioSphere Medical as a Silver Sponsor of the 1st Corporate Wellness Conference on October 27th and 28th, 2009.

In November 2002, BioSphere Medical, Inc. received 510(k) clearance from the Food and Drug Administration, or FDA, to market their Embosphere® Microspheres for Uterine Fibroid Embolization (UFE).  They were the first company to gain regulatory clearance to market a product for UFE in the United States. They have continued to focus on seeking to grow their Embosphere Microsphere business through their ASK4UFE® awareness and education program and through physician training.  www.ask4ufe.com

Fibroids are a Common Medical Condition

Uterine fibroids are benign (non-cancerous) tumors that grow on or within the muscle tissue of the uterus. Approximately 20-40% of women 35 years and older have fibroid tumors. Fibroids are more common among women of African-American descent. Some statistics indicate that up to 80% of African-American women will develop uterine fibroids.

Why They Matter To the Workplace

While some women do not experience any of the symptoms of fibroids, the location and size of fibroid tumors can cause symptoms that can affect a woman’s quality of life…and their productivity at work. Women suffering from fibroids may be taking several days off per month to cope with symptoms that include pain, fatigue and heavy menstrual bleeding.

Searching for Solutions

More than 5 million women in the U.S. have symptomatic fibroids, yet only 300,000 of them have surgery each year. That means there are millions of women living with symptoms – often because they believe surgery is their only option after medical therapy. Many employees may be suffering in silence, under-treating their symptoms or not doing anything about them, rather than deal with extended hospitalization and time away from work and family.  And many object to a hysterectomy – even a laparoscopic or robotic procedure – because they fear a loss of womanhood or early onset of menopause.

A Safe and Effective Alternative

Uterine fibroid embolization (UFE) offers employees another option. The American College of Obstetrics & Gynecology (ACOG) recommends UFE as a safe and effective alternative to surgery for appropriate patients based upon Level A evidence.1  UFE is a non-surgical treatment for symptomatic uterine fibroids performed by a specialist known as an interventional radiologist. Using a catheter and guide wire, the physician injects tiny microspheres into the vessels that feed the fibroids, blocking the blood supply and relieving symptoms.
