Corporate Wellness Becoming More Inclusive and Personalized: Interview with Mike Brantley, Certified Corporate Wellness Specialist (CCWS).

Certified Corporate Wellness Specialist

In today’s diverse and dynamic workplaces, personalized and inclusive corporate wellness programs are more than perks. Tailoring initiatives to meet the unique needs of individuals and fostering an environment that embraces diversity helps companies enhance employee engagement, boost productivity, and reduce absenteeism. Inclusive wellness programs also signal a commitment to equity, ensuring that every team member feels valued and supported regardless of background, identity, or ability.

Mike Brantley, a recent CCWS graduate and United States Naval Community College Guidance Counselor & Student Success Coach, sat with Corporate Wellness Magazine to share insights into the trends disrupting the corporate wellness industry and the need for more holistic and personalized programs.

How important is well-being to you personally?

Well-being is essential, touching every part of my life. Maintaining my physical and mental health enables me to support others more effectively and to bring my best self to work every day. I firmly believe that the healthier we are personally, the better we can serve our teams and organizations.

Where do you see the industry headed?

The corporate wellness industry is on an exciting path, focusing on holistic, inclusive well-being. I see it becoming more integrated with company culture, shifting from optional benefits to core components of the employee experience. There’s also a trend toward customization, where programs are tailored to meet individual needs, incorporating everything from mental health to financial wellness.

What are the most important focus areas for you in corporate wellness for the upcoming year?

My focus for the upcoming year will be on mental health, diversity in wellness offerings, and sustainable wellness practices. Building resilience, fostering inclusivity, and helping employees manage stress effectively are critical to creating a supportive work environment. Additionally, I plan to advocate for sustainable wellness practices, from eco-friendly options in wellness facilities to digital solutions that reduce environmental impact.

What was the most valuable takeaway of the CCWS program for you?

The CCWS program has been instrumental in shaping my approach. The most valuable takeaway has been understanding the impact of data-driven insights in wellness planning. Learning how to measure outcomes effectively has empowered me to develop programs with lasting impact, aligning wellness initiatives more closely with company goals.

How significant is well-being to you and how does it influence your work in corporate wellness?

Well-being influences every facet of my work in corporate wellness. I strive to lead by example and create programs that genuinely resonate with employees. Knowing how transformative wellness can be in one’s life, I’m driven to make it accessible and meaningful for all employees.

Recent trends or changes in the corporate wellness field that you find impactful.

One impactful trend is the integration of mental health into the core of wellness programs. Mental health resources are becoming more accessible, reducing stigma and encouraging open discussions. This shift signals an industry-wide recognition that mental well-being is foundational to overall health.

Key focus areas in wellness for the upcoming year and strategies to support them.

In the coming year, my key focus areas will be mental health support, personalized wellness journeys, and work-life balance initiatives. To support these, I plan to leverage technology for personalized tracking and feedback, provide workshops that build resilience, and offer flexible options that accommodate diverse employee needs.

How did the CCWS certification contribute to your professional development and your approach to wellness?

The CCWS certification has enhanced my ability to design wellness programs that are not only impactful but sustainable. It’s deepened my understanding of wellness metrics and taught me how to align wellness initiatives with business objectives, giving my proposals and initiatives added credibility and strategic value.

One piece of advice you would offer to those developing wellness programs.

For anyone developing wellness programs, my advice is simple: start by listening to your employees. Understand their needs, concerns, and goals. Wellness programs are most effective when they address real issues faced by employees. Tailor your initiatives to support those needs while creating an inclusive, supportive environment.
